I'm pleasantly surprised at how translators are more and more under the spotlight and are seen as an interesting 'element of novelty'... First Arrival, now this!

Anyway, I'm pretty curious at how the figure of the translator will be pictured by this film and whether it will be close to the truth. The article says "it’s based on hours of interviews with translators who work on bestsellers" , which is comforting. Let's hope they made good use of that information! What do you think? Will you go see it?

eleonorang I'm definitely going to go see it! I was fairly pleased with the Arrival when it came out, but I did see conflicting opinions from actual translators. What did you guys think of the movie?

I'll see it as soon as it premieres ?
I want to see how they actually depict translators' way of working. I can only guess, but it looks like a well documented film.
Also, some freelance translators in Spain said that "this film does not represent them if the characters don't translate in their pajamas", LOL.

Gee! I hope the bunker had the Internet and cats. But since it's a thriller, I'm guessing that wasn't the case for those poor souls.

P.S.: I wonder if this is how they localize some of the most popular AAA video game projects? I bet that's the case, because some of the poorly produced translations are a cry for help. ?

KarenMontaldi I was totally happy with it. It satisfied both the translator and the sci-fi lover in me at the same time, but I agree with you that others have complained about the way our profession is depicted. Some have even criticized the assumption that a linguistic expert such as the protagonist could be called a translator. Personally, I don't see the world in black or white and don't like to put people in boxes, so it didn't really bother me. Heck, we discover more and more nowadays what a crucial role linguistics plays in our work, right? ?
