About Giovanna
Giovanna “Gio” Lester, CT started her career in the language field as co-developer of the English Language Workshop in her native Bahia, Brazil, in 1980.
She has lived in the US since 1985, where she has taught English and Portuguese as an Adjunct Professor at Florida International University; she has also taught the introductory module of Legal Translation at Brasillis Idiomas (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), and organized international and local professional events.
As part of her advocacy work, she has served as Assistant Administrator and Administrator of the Interpreters Division of the American Translators Association (ATA), was President of the original ATA Florida Chapter, FLATA, Director and Interim Vice Chair of the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters. Gio co-founded the current ATA Florida Chapter, ATIF and was elected its first President in 2010 for the 2011-12 term, and later elected Director to serve the 2014-2016 term, but had to take over as President of the Interim Board (2015).
Giovanna Lester is a member of the Miami-Dade College Translation and Interpreting Advisory Council, Editor of The NAJIT Observer, a weekly online publication, and an international conference interpreter and translator.
Gio’s latest project was a pioneering online conference Congresso Virtual de Tradução e Interpretação-ConVTI (Online Translation and Interpreting Conference) which she organized together with Márcia Nabrzecki. ConVTI, which was successfully held on August 26-27, 2017.
