I confess: I can spend hours reading through sites of advice for freelance translators, writers, you name it. They are often sites made by people who are freelancers themselves, and can now “give you advice”.
Then, at the end of a bunch of hours reading how to increase my rates, how to find clients and keep them, how to build my website, I end up with the feeling that most of these sites are pretty much the same (and wondering how did their authors end up making money off building such a thing).
Of course they can inspire a bit, they can give a bit of motivation but, overall, they are all written in the same tone (air of times?), and this tone can really get too bit of a formula for me to feel a humane connection to it. It’s like they have been written by an automatic pilot with instructions to be cheerful and motivating, always in the same way.
Now, of course there are really thought-provoking, fresh, and helpful places to visit. For me, The Open Mic is obviously one of them.
What about you? Do you read career advice blogs and sites? Which ones did you find actually helpful and led to a real change in the way you were doing things?
