I’m Richard, Rich, or even Chard to certain people…
I’ve been a FR>EN translator for nearly 10 years. In January I handed in my notice to finally fulfill a dream of going freelance and learning what it really means to start a business and make a living through my own graft and creativity!
All sounds very sexy doesn’t it.
Little did I know, however, that we were about to live through a global pandemic that shares its name with a popular Mexican lager…
Coronavirus. What were the chances. When I handed in my notice in January, the first news stories were only just emerging from China. By the time I left my job in March, Europe was a week away from shutting down. What strange times to be starting a business venture!
But I’m not disheartened. Far from it. I take inspiration from all those helping to stop spread COVID-19 and have offered my services to this end on ProZ and Translators Without Borders. I’d be very interested to hear your take on it all, maybe in the new forum thread https://forum.theopenmic.co/d/577-coronavirus-the-situation-for-world-based-sole-traders
More generally, I’m really interested in learning from other digital-age translators who are mobile and complement their translation activity with other skills. I feel this platform caters well to this trend, certainly more so than traditional translator directories.
Finally, I’m going to go for Look who’s talking, in which BW does the voice-over for baby Mikey. A childhood classic!
Stay safe translators!
